Both men's and women's records were broken on Saturday on a cold, windy but dry day, and the opening PUMA Lakeland Trails event.

Andi Jones (Salford Harriers) dominated the men's race winning by over three minutes from fellow GB World Cross International James Walsh (Leeds City AC). Andi's time of 54.43 for the 15km off road course knocked a huge chunk off Steve Vernon's 2007 course record. Birthday girl and GB International Sarah Tunstall (Kendal AC) finished runner-up with GB International Olivia Walwyn (Altrincham & District AC) in third.

Clayton le Moors Harriers won both the men's and women's team prizes. Everyone on board were entertained and serenaded by singer/songwriter Pete Lashley. World Masters Mountain Running Champion Maureen Laney, from Clayton Harriers, won the ladies race, from Clare McKeown (Border Harriers) and Phillipa Walsh (Preston Harriers) in third. Children were treated to a guest appearance by the Ullswater Steamers mascot, Sammy the Squirrel, and enjoyed a fun day with bouncy castles, slides, face painting and their own Fun Trails.

The event was sponsored by Ullswater Steamers and lifestyle brand Puma, with £1000 worth of Puma product in prizes.
Lakeland Trails in Coniston a spectacular success

Lakeland Trails in Coniston a spectacular success

The fourth and final Lakeland Trails 2007 Festival of running and walking on Saturday, 6th October at Coniston Hall Showground near Coniston village was blessed with perfect weather, the warm sunshine showing off the Lake District in spectacular fashion.

The events within the Lakeland Trails brought out the best from the competitors too. From the International endurance athletes setting course records for the main race, the Puma Trailfox Coniston Trail Race, to the large group of Special Olympic from Wrexham competing in an additional Fun Trail, alongside distance running legend Ron Hill, and local MP Tim Farron. One competitor even sacrificed his own race to help an injured competitor who suffered a sprained ankle, and was given a special Sportsmanship award at the prize giving ceremony.

The day started with a new event, the Coniston Sport Trail, held on a beautiful 5.5km circuit finishing along the lake shore. Clare McKittrick from Leicestershire won the race, from Helm Hill’s Mat Owen. The Sport Trail was for everyone 12 years of age and older, and Ben Salt from Charnwood AC, Leicester won the Under 16 Boys race, with Amber Wheywell (Stockport Harriers) winning the girls Under 16 race from Frances Nesirky of Ireland, making a special journey to compete in the event.

Former British Universities Cross Country Champion, 22 year old James Walsh, (Leeds City AC) won the men’s 15km race in a new course record of 52.56. John Brown (Salford Harriers), runner up last weekend in Italy in the World Masters Mountain Running Championships, improved on last year’s third place to finish runner up again at Coniston. The UK’s latest sub 4 minute track miler, Matt Barnes (Altrincham & District AC), who broke the 4 minute mile barrier in mid September, finished a fine 3rd. International road, cross country and mountain runner, 23 year old Olivia Walwyn (Altrincham & District AC) set a new women’s record in 61.47. Mary Wilkinson (Bingley Harriers), the Inter Counties Fell Running Champion was runner up from International triathlete Victoria Graves (City of York AC)

Four time world record holder and the gold medallist in the Commonwealth Games Marathon in 1970, Ron Hill MBE, competed in his 2233rd race of his career. 69 year old Ron has run every day since March 1964, running over 15 000 miles. Our local MP, Tim Farron also ran superbly in the 15km race, finishing 315th in 1 hour 40 minutes. Both Ron and Tim presented the prizes worth over £2500 to the winning athletes.

Family Fun Day

Throughout the day competitors, spectators, families and children were kept entertained with live music from the Interactive Jazz Band, there were bouncy castles & slides, a 7.5m high climbing wall, face painting, PA commentary with DJ Christian Hoyle, food stalls, a beer tent and retail stands. For the children, the guest appearance and dancing by Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit before the start of their Fun Trails was the highlight of an exciting day’s sport.

Coniston Mountain Rescue. Lakeland Trails in Coniston was supporting the local charities Coniston Mountain Rescue and Barrow Dad’s Group, with many of the competitors raising funds for CMR through sponsorship. The event is hoping to raise in excess of £1000 for the charities.

UK Leader

Feedback from competitors via the nations biggest running community website Runnersworld, (www.runnersworld.co.uk/events/ratingsall.asp?en=31736&year=2007&ugn=5970&sp=&v=2 ) with over 300 000 subscribers, has been phenomenal. Every race rating for the event is currently 100%, which should improve the status of the race from it’s ranking of 14th best race in the UK in 2006, to one of the top three races in 2007. Online entries for next year's Lakeland Trails series and more details from the event website www.lakelandtrails.org

Results – Puma Trailfox Coniston Trail Race 15km

Men

1.

The most beautiful lakeside trail in the whole of England, following the edge of Ullswater from Howtown to Glenridding will be at it's autumnal best in early November, and plays host to a "bonus event" for the popular Lakeland Trails series. A half hour cruise to the start aboard an Ullswater Steamer; a stunning 12km trail run and a meal feast courtesy of Wilf's Outdoor Caterers, has certainly proved popular.

Entry limits were exceeded in early September, but thanks to the kind support from main sponsors Ullswater Steamers, a larger capacity vessel is now available for the first two sailings at 9am for the Ullswater Challenge and Nordic Challenge, and the 10am sailing for the first Puma Trailfox Ullswater Trail Race.

As of this morning (15th September) organisers report there are only 9 places left in the Ullswater Challenge, and a total of 48 places left in the final two sailings for the Puma Trailfox Ullswater Trail Race. Entries are strictly first come first served basis and further details can be found from the event website www.lakelandtrails.org
