			<title>Lakeland Trails celebrate 10th anniversary</title>
			<link>http://www.trailrunning.co.uk?action=article.read&amp;article=F96D25A5-9F59-E27F-DDA241BBEC85886B</link>
			<description>In Staveley on Saturday 1st June 2013, Lakeland Trails will celebrate 10 years of organising their trail running events. Held in the same valley the event first took place over a decade ago, the Kentmere Trail races and challenge, which now starts from Staveley Recreation Ground, will mark a significant milestone for the Lakeland Trails team.
Lakeland Trails is the brainchild of former international athlete and event director Graham Patten, who realised his dream of bringing a European model of trail running to the Lake District. Grahams first event, dubbed the Garburn Trail Race, was held in September 2004 and had just 80 competitors and offered a point to point route from Kentmere, taking in the Garburn Pass. Since then, the events have grown considerably, in both the number of venues and competitors, attracting over 10,000 trail runners in 2012.
Graham Patten said, When I turned 40 I retired from competition and decided to put something back into this great sport that has given me so much during my lifetime. I was always impressed with the trail running events in the Alps that I was fortunate to compete in during my International running days, and wanted to bring a similar model back here to the Lake District. What sets these events apart isn&apos;t just the fabulous routes over sustainable bridleways, but also the many different courses for all abilities, along with a festival day out for spectators and families. It&apos;s great that so many people have enjoyed and supported the Lakeland Trails over the years. We&apos;re proud that in the last ten years the events have raised over &#xa3;100K for various charities, as well as providing a boost of over &#xa3;10 Million to the regional economy
Now in 2013, Lakeland Trails organise 8 events across the county throughout the year each providing its own unique festival atmosphere at the start and finish. All of the events are designed to cater for a variety of abilities, offering a 10km course in the morning, followed by a longer 10 mile challenge and race route in the afternoon, which provides participants two different starts times depending on when they expect to finish. The series also features the Lakeland Trails marathon and half marathon in Coniston; now in its third year it attracts over 1,000 participants from all over the world.
The Lakeland Trails events are managed by Kendal based VO2 Max Events, which is also responsible for the Ultimate Trails Challenge 100km ultra marathon and the Lakeland Rides cyclo sportives, all of which are new to their events calendar for 2013.
Graham Patten said, The Lakeland Trails series has been such a great success that those who take part often ask why we dont stage more events. Whilst were only a small team of 3 part-time staff, were expanding the number of events in response to the increasing demand for well organised sporting events. Having spoken with our Lakeland Trails participants, were confident both the Ultimate Trails and Lakeland Rides events are being well received and were working harder than ever to ensure theyre a huge success for those who take part.

			<description>
The 8th year for the Lakeland Trails event at Hawkshead took place on Saturday 27th April, and the event was a huge success, despite the wet weather leading up to the event making the venues waterlogged. Over 1000 competitors conquered the infamous, mile long, killer climb of the &quot;Coffin Trail&quot;. These included runners from all over the UK, along with overseas visitors from Australia, Japan, USA, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland.

The new venue at Hawkshead Recreation Ground, proved popular with competitors and spectators alike, and live performances by samba drumming band Boom Dang, and singer songwriter Pete Lashley, entertained the crowds in the spring sunshine.

The scenic trail course, which has been described by Runnerworld magazine as the most scenic race in Britain, takes in a circuit through Beatrix Potter country on the hills above Hawkshead village. The &quot;Coffin Trail&quot; proved tough work for everyone, but finisher&apos;s T shirts along with ASICS goody bags with a locally produced pudding from the Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company, made all the effort worthwhile.
Oldest competitors were 80 year old Malcolm Ball from Norfolk and 72 year old Charm Robson from St Bees.

The men&apos;s blue riband Hawkshead Trail Race 16km, was won by GB International Adam Peers, in a fantastic time of 62.25. Runner up was Adam Lloyd, Bromsgrove &amp; Redditch in 66.15, and John French, Eden Runners was in third. The women&apos;s race was won by Jo Gascoigne-Owens, Alnwick Harriers in 73.46, with Candice Heys, Clayton le Moors Harriers in runner up position in 76.22 with Edinburgh&apos;s Katherine Brownlee making the podium in third with 79.06.

The morning&apos;s Hawkshead Trail Run (11.6km), mens race was won by Helm Hill Runner, Will Jackson in 47.46, some six minutes ahead of second placed Tony Ward, from Team Trisports in 54.20, with Ian Cooper from Wirral in 54.51. The women&apos;s race was won by Emma Essex-Crosby, preston Harriers in 62.04, with Suzanne Toppin, Penrith in second and Kath Woodley, Ulverston in 3rd.

The event was supporting the Fix The Fells charity, along with other regional and national charities and thousands of pounds will be raised for these charities from the event.

Event sponsors and partners included running brand ASICS, Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Company, Pete Bland Sports, Mountain Trauma Rescue Services, Bowland Communications, James Kirby Photography, Trailrunning.co.uk; TrekandRun.com; Sleepmonsters.com, and Hawkshead Recreation Ground.

STOP PRESS - There are only a few places left for the next Lakeland Trails event in Staveley on Saturday 1st June, in both the Kentmere Trail 10km and 17km

			<title>100K in a Day? - Lake District&apos;s ULTIMATE Trails Challenge</title>

			<description>100K in a Day? - Lake District&apos;s ULTIMATE Trails Challenge

A brand new off road ultra marathon event is being launched by the award winning Lakeland Trails team, taking place on the weekend of 14th/15th September 2013.

The Ultimate Trails Challenge, is a 100km circuit of the central Lake District starts and finishes at Brockhole, Lake District National Park Visitor Centre, and takes in 6 mountain passes, with 14, 000ft of ascent &amp; descent, 5 picturesque lakes and 10 iconic feed stations. The Challenge is to complete the entire circuit within 24 hours. The way marked and marshalled course also has a 50km ultra marathon option covering the final half of the route and starting from Patterdale.

Course Director, Gaynor Prior, one of the UK&apos;s top ultra distance runners, is already convinced the stunning Lake District course will quickly become the most popular ultra marathon in the UK and appeal to an International audience. Gaynor says &quot;Having run the entire route, every step is amazing, the scenery stunning, and the start and finish venue at Brockhole is just a perfect venue to stage such an event.&quot;

The Ultimate Trails Challenge will be supporting the charity Nurture Lakeland and Fix the Fells, and aims to bring a world class ultra marathon event to the Lake District. Already the event has partnered with the world&apos;s biggest ultra marathon - the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), and the 100km is worth 3 entry credit points for the UTMB.

Event Director, Graham Patten says &quot;This year we&apos;re celebrating our 10th year organising the Lakeland Trails, and we&apos;re responding to the growing demand for personal challenges such as ultra marathons. We wanted to create something truly unique here in the Lake District, and to offer a real challenge to everyone - runners and walkers alike, to achieve something remarkable by completing 100km in a day, in a safe, enjoyable and environmentally responsible event. We hope normal everyday people will see completing the Ultimate Trails as their equivalent to experienced fell runners tackling the epic Bob Graham Round&quot;

Early bird entry is available until 30th April and entry numbers are being restricted for this first year on a first come, first served basis. Already the event is over 50% full, so we&apos;re advising people to book now to guarantee their place. Entry includes electronic chip timing, food and drinks along the route, event T shirt memento, digital photo memento out on the course, a meal at the finish and coach transfer to the start (50km only).

Conditions were distinctly soft going for the runners, many running in fancy dress, embracing the festive, end of season feel to the 2012 Lakeland Trails series. All finishers were rewarded with a locally produced Sticky Chocolate Pudding.

Santa Claus took time out from his busy schedule to start the children&apos;s Fun Trails, and even sped along for the first kilometre at the head of the main 10km race.

GB Internationals took honours in each of the senior women categories for the 10km and 5km events. Rebecca Robinson (Kendal AC), completely dominated the 5km event, beating all the men and winning outright in 23.20. Second and third places went to Camilla and Emma McKnespiey (Carlisle &amp; Apsatria) in 29.27 and 29.37. Adam Lloyd (Bromsgrove &amp; Redditch AC) was first man in a time of 23.34, followed by Joe Parkins (ua Kendal) in 32.02 and Tony Ainsworth (ua Kendal) in 34.23.

In the 10km event, in-form Damian Nicholls (Wilmslow Running Club) won a great race in 37.47, with Nick Leigh (Altrincham &amp; District AC) in 38.20 and Will Jadesa (Helm Hill Runners) in 39.53. GB International Mel Hyder (Helm Hill Runners), also dominated the women&apos;s event, winning in 45.05, from Rennell Brennan (Glaxo Hoad Hill) in 52.06 and Suzanne Toppin (ua Penrith) in 52.41.

Winners of the best fancy dress costume were Rachel and Simon Price, who ran around the 10km course dressed as Christmas Crackers, beating all the elves, pixies, santas and reindeers. A live performance by singer / songwriter Pete Lashley singing some adapted Christmas hits entertained the crowds before the prize giving.

The running event was followed in the evening with the first Trails &amp; Ales end of season party, with 120 guests attending for the 2012 series prize giving. Special awards were presented to those amazing individuals who have completed all the Lakeland Trails events in Olympic year - the Super 8&apos;s, as well as all the volunteers who enable these events to happen. This rounds off the most successful year ever for the Lakeland Trails, with over 10, 000 competitors taking to the trails in 2012.

			<title>International Flavour for 8th Coniston Trail</title>
			<link>http://www.trailrunning.co.uk?action=article.read&amp;article=3FB5C73D-B029-D2CC-564497856518DDFB</link>
			<description>The 8th International Lakeland Trails Festival in Coniston on Saturday 6th October, was a huge success, thanks to a massive &quot;behind the scenes&quot; community effort in the weeks leading up to the event.

Despite the appalling recent wet weather, making the John Ruskin School playing field venue waterlogged and unusable for car parking, organisers worked on contingency plans to enable the event to safely go ahead. John Ruskin School, Coniston Sports &amp; Social Club, Coniston Primary School, Coniston Hall, Coniston Parish Council, Coniston Mountain Rescue and Community Police Officers all helped save the event from cancellation.

The first dry day in weeks greeted nearly 1300 competitors from all over the world, to the picturesque village of Coniston, in the heart of the English Lake District. Japan&apos;s Yujiro Iida, who travelled to the UK especially for this event, won the blue riband 15km Coniston Trail Race in 60.16. Runner up was Steward Gregory, Holme Pierrepont RC in 60.55 and making the podium in third place was John French, Eden Runners in 61.06.

Former world mountain running champion, Vic Wilkinson, Bingley Harriers, was an easy winner of the women&apos;s race, finishing an amazing 10th place overall in 66.28. Runner up was Clayton le Moors Harrier, Candice Heys in 69.43, with Riina Kuuselo, Knowle &amp; Dorridge RC in 70.02

Oldest competitor in the race was 79 year old Malcolm Ball, from Norfolk, who won the Veteran 70 category. Some competitors were celebrating milestone birthdays at the event - a bottle of champagne was opened at the finish for a 50th birthday, and fancy dress competitors were celebrating a 30th birthday.

Representatives from 13 different nations took part in the event, including USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland.

In the morning&apos;s new 10km Coniston Trail Run, Edward Evans, Wharfedale Harriers, won the men&apos;s race in 34.59, and Carla Brown, Cambridge Harriers, made the long journey north worthwhile, winning the women&apos;s race in 39.13

More than 100 children took part in the Fun Trails, all receiving a special finisher&apos;s medal.

The event was supporting local charity Coniston Mountain Rescue, along with many national charities benefitting from runners raising funds through sponsorship. Over &#xa3;250 000 of economic benefit will be generated from the event to Cumbria, a welcome boost for a quiet time of the year.

The event partners and sponsors included lifestyle brand PUMA, hydration partner NUUN, the National Trust, Forestry Commission, Lake District National Park Authority, R and R Photos, Fuelbelt, Trailrunning.co.uk, Sleepmonsters.com, VO2 Max Events and Coniston Mountain Rescue.

There are still a few places available for the Lakeland Trails Festival in Ullswater, on 4th November, which includes a half hour cruise to the start on board the Ullswater Steamer &quot;Raven&quot;. A new event is taking place on 15th December at Cartmel Racecourse - the Sticky Chocolate Trail Run 10km &amp; 5km - enter online at www.lakelandtrails.org

			<description>Glorious sunshine greeted over 3000 competitors and spectators for the Lakeland Trails running and walking festival at Staveley village on Saturday, making this the largest sporting event in the Kendal area.

The biggest field ever in the nine year history of the Lakeland Trails event at Staveley, with over 1000 competitors of all ages, took part in the various running and walking events throughout the day. Over 90% of the visitors travelled from outside Cumbria, with over 30 from the London club West 4 Harriers, and overseas visitors from USA, Australia, France, Holland, Germany, Belgium and Ireland.

Kookaburra All Stars samba drumming band got everyone pumping at the starts with their awesome samba drumming. Sweltering heat made conditions difficult for running, and the organiser&apos;s even added an extra climb, the infamous Sting in the Tail on top of Reston Scar just over a kilometre from the finish. Cowbells and high fives at the summit helped everyone working hard in the sweltering heat to earn their souvenir &quot;survivor&apos;s&quot; technical T shirts.

In the blue riband 17km Kentmere Trail Race, Chris Steele, from Borrowdale Fell Runners, smashed the course record, finishing in an incredible 69.25 and leading home a host of fellow GB International runners. Second place went to Ambleside AC&apos;s Ben Abdelnoor in 71.01, with James Smith, Leeds City AC in 3rd in 72.11. In the women&apos;s race, GB International Jo Buckley from Calder Valley Fell Runners, won in another course record of 83.21, with Rebecca Sheffield from Windermere finishing runner up in 86.40 and London&apos;s Emily Loughnan making the podium in 3rd in 88.10

The new KentmereTrail Run 10km was won by local Kendal runner, Will Smith, from Helm Hill Runners in 35.33 and Sarah Ridehalgh, from Accrington Road Runners scooped the first lady&apos;s trophy in 39.55.

Oldest competitor was 79 year old Malcolm Ball from Norfolk, who won the men&apos;s veteran 70 award in the 17km race. Kendal auctioneer Kev Kendall, was the only runner to complete BOTH the 10km event in the morning and the 17km event in the afternoon. Charity runner Paul Harland, ran the race dressed as Minnie Mouse, raising money for the Run For Ben Foundation.

Over 100 children under 12 took part in the Fun Trails taking place around the Recreation Ground, with all the finisher&apos;s winning a special medal.

A live performance by singer / songwriter Pete Lashley before the prize giving entertained the huge crowds enjoying the sunshine on Staveley Recreation Ground. National outdoor website www.trakandrun.com were filming the event, and Dave Wise from TrekandRun.com ran the 17km race with a video camera attached to his head.

The event was supporting the local Kendal Mountain Rescue charity, along with other regional and national charities. Over &#xa3;5000 will be generated by the event for various charities, and the event will be providing an economic boost to the area in excess of &#xa3;250 000. The event was organised by local event management company VO2 Max Events, based in Kendal.

Event sponsors and partners included lifestyle brand PUMA, hydration partner NUUN, R and R Photos, Wilson&apos;s Kendal Mint Cake, Pete Bland Sports, Trailrunning.co.uk; TrekandRun.com; Sleepmonsters.com, and Kendal Mountain Rescue.

The next event in the 2012 Lakeland Trails series is at Coniston on 1st July, with the Lakeland Trails Marathon and Half Marathon - the most scenic trail marathon and half marathon in the UK. All entries for these events close at midnight on 31st May. See www.lakelandtrails.org for more details.
