Hi I'm new to trail running, having previously been a road running girl. Just wondering if anyone new of a good place to find suitable trail shoes? (at a reasonable price, as i'm a lowly student!) Have a great pair for roads, but they obviously don't suit the trails,

Hey, Well you need to try them on really, so you should go for a fitting at a good running shop. However, as you'll know from being a road runner, buyng trainers in shops rather than online can work out much more expensive: a quick google search can often secure your trainers for two thirds to half the rrp that they will inevitably be sold at on the high street. So, this is your first dilemma! If you're buying 'blind' online it might be an idea to get some trail shoes that are the same brand as your running shoes (Mizuno trail shoes have the same fittings as their road shoes, for example). If you go for a different brand, like Salomon or Inov-8 make sure you buy them from a good online retailer that will change them with no questions if they're too tight or just not right. Inov-8s, for example, get many rave reviews but are a very narrow fit in comparison to most trainer brands. So many, like me, while keen to try them just can't get them to fit properly. Of online stores, I've found Freedom Outdoors and Wiggle (www.wiggle.co.uk) to be very good. Good luck p.s. don't be tempted to go to Run and Become (if you live in London, Cardiff or Edinburgh). They might be friendly when making the sale but pity anyone who tries to return a pair to them.

Hi,
I was just wondering what I should look for in a good trail running shoe? I have also always been a road runner so I've always been careful about good cushioning to protect the knees etc but really have no idea about what is important when selecting a train shoe.
Thanks

I would avoid North Face and go for trail shoes made by a recognised running shoe brand. Which you then go for will depend on you: how they feel when you try them, what your preferences are (lots of support, lots of cushioning or low profile, for example), what you want them for (road and trail, just trail or cross country) and so on. But, as I said, I would go for brand who make running shoes rather than a brand (like North Face) who make walking shoes and are trying to cash in on the Trail Running boom-NF have no running shoe heritage and I've yet to see a review in a running mag of a running shoe by them. Have a look at Mizuno, Salomon, Inov8, and Puma TFs. They're all makers of good trail shoes and you're sure to find some that you get on with.

Hi - I had a day off work today because of the snow so decided to go for a run, the PUMA's were excellent, lots of snow and half frozen puddles, does anyone run in leggings? Ive been using rugby training trousers but they are a bit rustly like corduroys but worse lol

i cant find them puma's anywhere.also i have wide feet do you think they may fit? i've been trying to buy some trail trainers since christmas.i'm still using my asics. there is not many shops about in northampton.even our running shop does not cater, blacks dont have half sizes(not in northampton anyway) and phil advised me against the north face and i'm happy he did. i've not met anyone who rates them, not even blacks who sell them rate them. i think i'll have to travel further afield.

if you go to advanced search on ebay and select search by seller then type 'top999sports' thats where i bought my Pumas from, i also have wide feet and they do feel tight when you out them on but once you set off they get really comfy, i'd rather have a snug fit then a sloppy wide fit.

Any opinions on New Balance? I've been a fan for a few years but now I'm doing more running I'm realising they lack support. And, I've heard a few people refer to them as No Balance!
