Soft going for Cartmel Racecourse season opener Cartmel Racecourse played host on Saturday 20th March to the 2nd Ultimate Trails adventure trail running series, with 700 competitors taking part in the day’s various running events, some travelling from as far as USA, Italy, Germany & Belgium. Heavy overnight rain made the going soft, although oldest competitor 81 year old John Nettleton from Great Langdale AC made light work during the 11 o’clock Sticky Toffee Trail Run over a distance of 10km Scotland’s Marcus Scotney, Dumfries Running Club, won the blue riband 18km Ultimate Cartmel Trail Race in 70.26 by several lengths , winning the impressive Ian Hales Memorial Trophy. Runner up was Darren Bilton from Leeds City AC in 72.26, with James Buis, Heaton Harriers making the podium in 73.04. In the ladies race also over 18km, the bookies favourite, Ulverston’s Helen Woodley was first filly home in a time of 92.18. Runner up was Clare Buis, Heaton Harriers, in 97.10 by a head, from Dallam’s Helen Heap in third in 97.12. The events started and finished on the Racecourse, with a grandstand finish, and all competitors received a locally produced sticky toffee pudding and race finisher’s T shirt for their efforts. Many of the participants were raising funds for regional and national charities, and the event is expected to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Matty Sutton, Penrith, 51.41 2 o’clock – Ultimate Cartmel Trail Race 18km - Men : 1. Marcus Scotney, Dumfries Running Club, Scotland, 70.26; 2. Martin Hilton, Leeds City AC, 72.26; 3.
