Hat-trick for GB International Susan Partridge in the PUMA Kentmere Trail Race & Challenge

Glorious sunshine greeted competitors for the 7th PUMA Lakeland Trails festival of running and walking events in Staveley. Hundreds turned out for the spectacle of the Kookaburra All Stars samba drumming band performing on the Recreation Ground at the start of each event. The events were started by Arthur Capstick from Staveley Parish Council, and World Champion Skyrunner Rob Jebb, from Staveley. Winner of the new 17km PUMA Kentmere Trail Race, GB marathon international Susan Partridge, Leeds City AC, was in a class of her own in the women’s race, making it a hat-trick of wins at Staveley and finishing a staggering 5th overall in 77.35. Susan was picked for the GB European Championships marathon team in Barcelona later this year after finishing second British girl in this year’s Virgin London Marathon. Runner-up was fell running champion Jo Waites, Calder Valley Fell Runners, also making the top 10 overall, in a time of 80.09, with Northumberland’s Jenny Watts making the podium in 81.02. Winner of the new 17km PUMA Kentmere Trail Race was local Ings resident Jon Deegan, Ambleside AC, producing a fantastic performance to win in 73.51 for the second consecutive year. Runner-up was Mark Johnston, Bellahouston Road Runners in 74.31 and making the podium in 3rd was Steve Brennan, Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers in 75.56 Oldest competitor in the Trail Race was 70 year old Charm Robson, from the St Bee’sTri club, finishing in 324th place in 2hrs 25min 09 secs. A hundred children under 12 competed in the Fun Trails around the Recreation Ground, and a carnival, family friendly, atmosphere with bouncy castles, slides, face painting, caterers, trade stands and live performances by the Kookaburra All Stars and singer/songwriter Pete Lashley. The event was supporting Kendal Mountain Rescue, along with the regional charities Cancer Care and North West Air Ambulance. Main sponsors of the event were lifetsyle brand PUMA, sock brand Bridgedale, along with Pete Bland Sports, Trailrunning.co.uk and Wilson’s Kendal mint cake. Results – Men : 1.
